Day 20: Homeward Bound

 Another North American Road Trip

Day 20

Wednesday, July 8th

This is the final day of our trip (assuming all goes to plan.). We got up at 6:30 and were out of the house and on the road by 7AM.

Our first stop was Backwoods Donuts. They had some amazing choices and it was hard to make our selections. Both Desmond and Bryan ended up with donuts that had cereal on top. Bryan’s was a peanut butter chocolate flavor.

We drove into Washington. We drove past fields and fields of wheat. Desmond read the abilities of various cards from the Magic deck that Bryan got in Calgary as we went along. We wished we had remembered to fill our waterbottles before we left. We finished off the water that was in them and kept driving.

We planned to eat Chipotle in Tri Cities. Only we would arrive about 15 minutes before they would open. So we figured we would stretch our legs at a grocery store and get chicken and eggs so that we would not have to leave our house to get food for dinner and breakfast tomorrow. After doing that and gassing up the cruck, the Chipotle was supposedly open. So we headed there.

We enjoyed our food and just being out of the car for a bit. We were back on the road before 11:30 AM, feeling much happier about things in general.

We drove into Oregon, seeing as it is actually faster to get home through Oregon than staying in Washington the whole way. Meanwhile, Bryan and I resumed our Oregon Trail game on the iPad to pass the time. After awhile the drive became really pretty, following alongside the Columbia River, its deep blues contrasting with the bright yellows of the dry, grassy land.  Out in the distance we spotted Mt. Hood (though not from the side we are accustomed to seeing it from).

After driving about an hour and a half from the Chipotle, we stopped and got ourselves Dairy Queen treats. There was the possibility of stopping today and getting a junior ranger badge, but Desmond opted for us driving straight home. I am in full support of this decision.

We watched the wind surfers out our window, their crescent sails catching the wind high above them like a kite. Desmond commented “That looks hard. And it is probably harder than it looks.”  We agreed.

We played some more Oregon Trail. We enjoyed the view of the gorge. I’m always pleased when returning home to find that it is every bit as beautiful as other places we drive great distances to visit.

We arrived safely home by 3PM. Cosmo was very happy to see us. And we began to unpack, do laundry and just generally be happy to be home.

Thanks for tagging along with us on our adventure!
