Day 10: Meow Wolf

  Another North American Road Trip

Day 10:

Sunday, June 28th

Today we woke at a leisurely pace, had breakfast at the hotel, and I made us up a lunch of PB&Js.

I used a hand broom and dust pan to sweep as much of the Great Dunes out of our vehicle as possible. So. Much. Sand. Everywhere. Ha!   Meanwhile, Bryan and Desmond repacked our things so we could leave.

We checked out of the hotel shortly before our check out time.

We drove to a Target and restocked on fizzy waters and got Bryan a new pair of sunglasses. Also, we found Desmond some new pants of the kind he likes. Which is great, because the new ones I had bought him before the trip had been miss-delivered and so the ones he had were getting pretty tight.  I found some vitamins and face sunscreen to replace what I’d run out of in the last 9 days.

Then we drove across Denver to Meow Wolf. For those that followed along on our 8 week road trip - you may remember that we went to an interactive exhibit that mixes puzzle-solving, art, storytelling and code breaking into a museum-ish experience. Last time we went to Omega Mart in Los Vegas. This time, we went to Convergence Station here in Denver.

It wasn’t yet time for our timed entry, but we had heard the parking lot fills quickly, so we went ahead of time, got parking easily, and sat on the stoop eating our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Pringles.  When we had finished our little meal, it was still way ahead of the time we had bought our tickets for. Fortunately, the lady at the ticket counter was able to adjust our entry time, and we got to go in with no waiting at all. Yay!

Inside, we were given the lay of the land. Here is where we recommend you start. There’s the bathrooms, snack shack, and gift shop. You can stay as long as you like and go wherever - like a museum.  We took the inter-dimensional elevator ride to the fourth floor and started to explore.

The place is full of sights and sounds. There are all sorts of interactive displays. Sometimes you push buttons just to see what they do. Sometimes, they are part of an elaborate mission you stumble upon and complete. There are lots of different areas which vary in lighting, looks, sound, and temperature. It is maze-like. Or like walking through a fun house. There are surprising items and bits of story to discover all around.

We had been there for about an hour and a quarter (and solved two mini missions - one that made all the lights in the huge room themed as an outdoor street flash and our success message went up on the screen) when we decided to go get a card from the front desk that you can use to boop little stations that give you more information about the story. We went back over all the ground we had covered looking for these stations and tapping our card.

As we were collecting the info we needed to solve more of the mystery, the Phenomenanmoly event began. Aliens from other dimensions (costumed cast members) were walking around, and then there was a dance show with the finale being a huge puppet that reminded me of a Chinese dragon, but was themed as an alien creature of some kind. They chanted and had everyone follow behind it as in a procession.

We decided we were tired and hungry at this point. We looked at the gift shop. Then at the snack shack. Not finding anything that exactly suited, we decided to bid the Convergence Station a fond farewell and drive on down the road.

We saw a sign for a Spaghetti Factory, and that sounded like just the kind of sit down, in a quiet space, and take a long time to eat some comfort food place we needed right then. So we went and had some spaghetti and fresh sourdough bread. Yum!

Then we continued on to another hotel, on the other side of Denver. I did laundry for the second time this roadtrip (so easy to do when we stay at the Home2Suites). We rested for a bit, and then Bryan took Desmond to swim in the pool.

Then it was time for Spaghetti leftovers (bed time snack seemed warranted since we had eaten our dinner around 4PM) and off to bed.

Keep Traveling with the Schmidts on Day 11
