Day 19: Silverwood

Another North American Road Trip

Day 19

Tuesday, July 7th

Today we woke up and packed a picnic lunch, applied lots of sunscreen, put on our swimsuits (and additional clothing to further prevent sunburns) and all hopped into our friend’s van and drove over to Silverwood. We got a picture of our group at the entrance sign, and went and got in line for when the gates opened at 11AM. 


We walked in, rented some lockers, stashed our stuff and then began going down the water slides where you ride intertubes. 


We split up into smaller groups, and planned to rejoin at lunch time. We had a good time. We did water slides, the wave pool, the lazy river where you float along in intertubes and try to steer each other under downpours at intervals. 


One of the highlights were the novelty of churro “fries”. They were adorable little churros with soft serve ice cream to dip them in. 




When it was the second time to reapply sunscreen, we decided to change into street clothes. We ate a snack, dried off, and when the 7th grade boys (who had lost track of time) were located - we walked over to the rollercoaster side of things. 




We did the log plume ride straight away. Then considered various rollercoasters. We ended up just touring the park in a loop and heading home for burgers. 



Our friends grilled up delicious burgers and we had a very summer-y dinner including watermelon, corn on the cob, and the Schmidts contribution of Bacon Pringles. 😂


After showers had been had and Aloe Vera applied, we headed off to bed at a reasonable time. We plan to get up early for our drive home tomorrow. (Our dog sitter is leaving for vacation tomorrow and we want to make sure they are able to get away on time.)  


We are so grateful to our friends for letting us stay with them and being our companions in the park today. Good times.

    Another North American Road Trip Day 10: Sunday, June 28th   Today we woke at a leisurely pace, had breakfast at the hotel, and I made us up a lunch of PB&Js.  I used a hand broom and dust pan to sweep as much of the Great Dunes out of our vehicle as possible. So. Much. Sand. Everywhere. Ha!     Meanwhile, Bryan and Desmond repacked our things so we could leave.  We checked out of the hotel shortly before our check out time.  We drove to a Target and restocked on fizzy waters and got Bryan a new pair of sunglasses. Also, we found Desmond some new pants of the kind he likes. Which is great, because the new ones I had bought him before the trip had been miss-delivered and so the ones he had were getting pretty tight.    I found some vitamins and face sunscreen to replace what I’d run out of in the last 9 days.  Then we drove across Denver to Meow Wolf. Day 9 - Great Dunes National Park

    Another North American Road Trip Day 9:  Saturday, June 27th This morning we took our time around camp. We didn’t really have anywhere to be until the Visitor Center opened at 9AM.  The setting of our campsite is quite pretty. There are rolling hills and the dunes out to the side.  When we were at the Visitor’s Center, Desmond asked about sledding down the dunes. We learned that boards and sleds were available to rent just outside the park. So we took a ten minute drive to rent some recreation equipment. 😄 Then we re-entered the park, and headed over to the dunes. I was just happy that the plan wasn’t a hike across the sand. At least not one without a purpose. We lugged the sled, sand board, and a lot of water over to the first dune. Desmond took off his shoes, donned his swim goggles, and sand boarded down the dune.  The wind was whipping the sand in our faces as we hiked back up the dunes and sledded down. Volcano, Hawaii - Day 22

Thursday, July 3rd Today is our last full day of sight seeing before our return trip home. As we were getting ready to leave, I snapped a couple photos in the backyard of our Air B&B.  Beautiful flowers and a cute little lizard were a great way to start my day. As we entered the park today, Mom traded in the pass she had purchased online last night and upgraded it to a senior lifetime pass.  It is hard to believe that my parents are able to get senior benefits at this point, but I am excited for her to have her lifetime pass!  It got all of the rest of us in with her, as well. We drove over to the welcome center and Desmond got his Junior Ranger packet.  Meanwhile, we got stamps for our National Parks Passports, and browsed the gift shop.   I liked this stain glass window of the volcano.
