Day 6 - Zion to Moab

  Another North American Road Trip

Day 6:

Wednesday, June 24th

Oh man, were we tired this morning.  After a big day of hiking and driving yesterday, and the elements (heat and wind, respectively) combining to make sleep challenging last night, we were all dragging this morning.

But we got out of our tents early, had some oatmeal, packed up our camp, and headed over to catch a bus into the park to do one more hike before we move on to our next stop.

It really is so nice that there are only busses and bikes in the park.  While it took a while waiting to get on to the shuttle this morning since there were so many other enthusiastic park goers in line with us, it makes the experience within the park so much better.  No stress about parking once in the park.  No concern about traffic jams due to wildlife sightings.  It makes it really simple and streamlined.

Desmond found poliwogs again in the water today (he had found some in the narrows yesterday, which surprised me).  I tried to get a little video clip of them.

These “Emerald Pools” were not very impressive this time of year.  And the waterfall was more like a trickle.  But the views of the surrounding rock formations and valley were just as stunning as ever.

After our hike we went and got smoothies at a little place in the town on the way out.  They were delicious.  Just the pick me up we needed.

We drove down the road in the direction of Moab.  We did a little grocery shopping - I got a small bagged salad, among other food items.  We found Desmond some sunglasses that he thought he would wear, so that was a plus.  We stopped for Chipotle lunch.  Desmond didn’t think he would be able to finish a whole meal today, so we just got him some chips and cheese, and later he finished his Subway sandwich.

It felt like a long drive to Moab since we were all so sleepy.  Bryan and I ate chocolate to help us stay awake in the car.  I have been reading a book about Emma Gatewood who was the first woman to hike the whole Appalachian Trail in one continuous trip by herself.  I have been day dreaming again about thru hiking since sitting next to some hikers doing the PCT yesterday while we were in Zion.

We were happy with our rooms at the Homewood Suites.  Desmond was really excited to see they had a stove top he could use to make ramen for dinner.  So he did.  He and Bryan had ramen, and I had my bagged salad.

Then there was, of course, some swimming for Desmond and I.  And we went to bed early, because… you guessed it… we wanted to get up early to go hiking before it got too hot.
