Family (and friends!) Japanese Adventure - Day 1

We are so excited to finally be going on this trip to Japan!  It has been a long time in the works. Originally scheduled for the summer of 2019 as a trip with my parents to show them the Tokyo Disney parks, we are thrilled to finally be going on this trip. Especially since family and friends will be “Traveling with the Schmidts.”





The plan was for the six of us (Bryan, Desmond & I, plus my Mom & Dad, and nephew Dylan) to fly to Japan more or less together in one big, happy group. However, our day flying over to Japan did not go as planned. Memorable moments included: Bryan and Desmond not being given seats on our first flight, our bags being mislabeled, 10 extra hours in the airport, unexpected time in San Francisco for Bryan and Desmond, me being told “you need to get back on the ramp, ma’am” when I attempted to go out onto the tarmac to prevent my bags from being sent away by three very perplexed looking airport workers, being separated on the commuter train in Japan (mom and I got on, Dad and Dylan did not) and mom asking “Do you know what stop we get off on?” And me saying “Not yet” as I quickly searched up the information. 



Also remarkable were the kind Japanese couple that waited for us as we hefted our suitcases down the stairs in Yokohama (since the elevator was done running for the night) to make sure that we were okay and to point us in the right direction of our hotel. 


Eventually, four out of the six of us checked into the Yokohama Hilton hotel and turned in for the night.

Sakaiminato, Japan - Day 7

  Wednesday, June 18, 2025   Today we have a shore excursion planned. This is “Plan B” since our only excursion was canceled due to weather. It took quite a while to get through the customs line, but when we did, we were greeted with regional characters to get photos with.  So that was value added. Later in the day, I saw lots of merchandise with these characters on them.  I guess it is a thing, where you go to a particular region in Japan, and then you buy the “local goods” that have their characters on it as a reminder of being in that location.  It’s a fun concept. After the quick photo op, we rode the bus out to Adachi Museum of Art.     It had very beautiful gardens that we viewed through windows that seemed to serve as a frame for the living art work. Our favorite feature of the gardens was how they had planned the shape of the tops of the trees to match the hills in the background, greatly enhancing the depth and scope of the garden. First Day in Yokohama - Day 2

June 13th (we lost a day going across the dateline)  The next day, Bryan and Desmond joined us. Unfortunately, while I had been able to reclaim Desmond’s and Bryan’s checked bags which had flown along with me, my bag and our garment bag with clothes in it for all of us for formal night were nowhere to be found. A team of ANA staff spent hours working diligently with Bryan at the airport when he arrived only to discover that the bags had never left Portland. So the bags would not be coming on the cruise with us.  This being the case, mom and I embarked on a shopping spree to replace “reasonably necessary items” so that I could still participate in the cruise activities I had planned to. I was grateful for the time I had spent using the Pimsleur Japanese courses. The phrases I had memorized came in handy.
