Extra At Sea Day - Day 5

 Monday, June 16

After breakfast together in the dining room, we parted ways with Mom and Dad and headed out to the promenade to take a walk. Near the front of the ship, we began to see seabirds gliding along beside the ship.

We watched them with interest, speculating about why they were hanging out near the ship. I wondered aloud whether they might be hunting.  Before long, we saw a small silver fish jump out of the water and sure enough, the birds dove for it!  We all started pointing and excitedly telling each other where we were seeing the fish come out of the water. What made it even more awesome, is that the fish we were seeing were actually flying fish!  We got to see them flying with their wing-like fins, in some cases for twenty feet or more. Meanwhile, the birds would be diving for them, sometimes snapping them up as they flew along above the water, and sometimes plunging down into the water after them while we cheered them on. About once in five dives we saw, a fish would be caught. I had so much fun watching them. It was seriously one of the most unique wildlife encounters I’ve seen off of a cruise ship. And the cherry on top was that we also got to see a pod of dolphins. I don’t think I will ever forget it, honestly.

Next, the Schmidts and Dylan played Tiny Epic Dungeon at a table with a view of the water out the window.

One of the things that had been a huge sellling point for the cruise in Dylan’s estimation was the fact that he could place orders from around the ship for food and they will come and deliver it where he is. There had been lots of excitement about summoning “Fry Guy” frequently. So as we sat down to play our game, he started ordering an order of fries for both he and Desmond.  Living the life!

Tiny Epic Dungeons is a new game to us, but it seems like it will be fun. We lost our first game, but got the feel for how to play and will try again later.

Shortly after our game it was time to meet up for lunch in the dining room. We pretty much had club sandwiches all around, and were surprised to find they had hard boiled eggs in them. They were good, though.

Then Desmond and Dylan decided to go for a swim. After some walking on the promenade, I headed back to the room to catch up the blog.

Next we decided to give our new game another try, now that we have a better idea of what we’re doing.

Again, Dylan had put in an order to “Fry Guy” in no time flat.  I ordered up some food as well and soon we all had snacks and drinks to enjoy, delivered to the table where we were playing our game. Such a fun feature!

We lost the game again, and then it was time to dress for dinner. Desmond has polo shirts to wear to the dining room so that he looks nice, and I decided to wear the dress again from last night since I enjoyed wearing it, and was at a different restaurant last night. Besides which, that would allow me to wash all of my shirts at once later in the evening. Dinner was delicious.

I had roasted pineapple with strawberry glaze to start. Then I tried gazpacho for the first time. I was curious about it because it appears in a picture book of Desmond‘s: The Rainy Day Robot. It was interesting. It reminded me of eating a mild, crunchy salsa. But it was not unpleasant. Then came the leg of lamb. Yum!

My dad likes to tease the waitstaff.  Today, early on during dinner, he jokingly asked the head waiter if he could fold his napkin into an animal.  While we were waiting for our desserts, the head waiter came over with a bird folded out of napkins in a cup and gave it to dad.  We all had a good laugh at that.

After we finished our dessert, Desmond went up to kid’s club, my parents were at a show, Dylan was relaxing, we started our laundry and took a walk on the promenade.

It was a perfect temperature, with a gentle breeze, and a view of the sun moving toward the island. Bryan and I watched the sun set. It was beautiful!

Tomorrow we have an opportunity to go ashore in Busan, Korea, and take a look around.
